Tripura police filed a case against Trinamool’s All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee and five other party leaders, several news portals reported on Wednesday.
Trinamool spokesperson Kunal Ghosh took to Twitter and wrote, “Khowai police have filed a case against Abhishek, Bratya, Dola, I, Subalda and Prakashdar under section 18/34 of the IPC, alleging a number of false allegations in favor of unjustly arrested grassroots activists. The BJP is scared.”
Three other leaders – Kunal Ghosh, Prakash Das, and Subal Bhowmik – were also mentioned in the FIR, India Today reported.
As per reports, Trinamool leaders including Abhishek Banerjee, reached Khowai police station to seek the release of detained Trinamool activists who were arrested for allegedly violating the Covid-19 norms. The police alleged that Banerjee and his colleagues shouted at the additional superintendent of police and other officers posted in the Khowai district.
“We booked them under Section 186 (obstruction of public servants in the discharge of his public function) and 36 (common intention) of Indian Penal Code on Tuesday,” Khowai Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar was quoted saying by the Hindustan Times.
The police further said that the five Trinamool leaders and ministers entered the house of the OC of Khowai police station and misbehaved.
According to the police the detainees could not be produced in court at that moment due to obstruction of police work for more than an hour. They were later released from their positions and brought to court. After that, the police filed a self-motivated case against the TMC leaders.
Meanwhile, Subal Bhowmik, one of the leaders mentioned in the FIR, denied the police’s allegations. “We didn’t misbehave with police on August 8,” he said. “All the charges are baseless.”
On Sunday, when the TMC leaders visited Tripura, their vehicles were allegedly attacked by ‘Bharatiya Janata Party supporters’, several media outlets had reported.
