Traffic violations cost J&K millions in fines over five years

The Traffic Police Department’s recent disclosure of fines totalling Rs. 11,76,13,125 collected from traffic violations over the past five years has brought to light a concerning trend in Jammu and Kashmir.

In response to an RTI query filed by MM Shuja, the department revealed alarming figures indicating a widespread disregard for traffic laws within the Union Territory.
The breakdown of fines collected annually paints a grim picture. In 2023, the Traffic Police amassed a significant Rs. 2.14 crore from violators, while 2022 saw an even higher amount of Rs. 3.4 crore being collected, showcasing heightened efforts to curb violations and prioritize road safety.

This trend persisted in preceding years, with Rs. 2.5 crore collected in 2021, Rs. 1.9 crore in 2020, and Rs. 1.74 crore in 2019, indicating a consistent pattern of traffic infractions.
The magnitude of these fines underscores the severity of the issue and the potential risk to public safety posed by reckless behavior on the roads. Common violations leading to fines include speeding, reckless driving, running red lights, unauthorized parking, and other infractions disrupting traffic flow and endangering lives.

In response, the Jammu and Kashmir Traffic Police have intensified efforts to promote road safety through enforcement measures, awareness campaigns, and imposing substantial fines to deter violators.

However, the continued accumulation of massive fines over the past five years suggests the need for a comprehensive approach to address the root causes of traffic violations and foster a culture of responsible driving and pedestrian behavior.
