TIHAR ALLOWS SUSHIL TO WATCH TV AHEAD OF TOKYO OLYMPICS

The Tihar jail administration on Thursday allowed Olympic medallist wrestler Sushil Kumar to watch television in a common area of the jail ward.

A Tihar Jail official said, “We have allowed Sushil Kumar to watch television in the common area since the Olympics is set to begin from tomorrow. He has made a request through his advocate and submitted his application. He has sought a TV set to keep in touch with the current happenings outside the jail and to get updates about wrestling.”

Earlier this month Sushil Kumar, the main accused in connection with the murder of wrestler Sagar Rana, had written a letter to the jail authorities demanding that a TV set be installed in his cell. According to a Tihar Jail official, Sushil had said in his letter that if TV is available, he will continue to get wrestling updates.

Sushil was shifted from Mandoli Jail to Tihar Jail No. 2 and is currently staying in a separate cell due to security threat. Special security arrangements have been made and police personnel have been deployed round the clock near his barrack.

On 4 May, wrestler Sagar Rana was beaten to death at Delhi’s Chhatrasal Stadium. Sushil Kumar and his associates allegedly assaulted him and two of his friends—Sonu Mahal and Amit Kumar—over a property dispute, at the stadium on the intervening night of 4-5 May.
