In response to ongoing concerns regarding solid waste management, a committee has been established to evaluate the future of the contract with Ecogreen, the current concessionaire. Led by CM’s principal secretary V Umashankar, the committee comprises key officials including urban local bodies (ULB) director Yashpal Yadav, MCG commissioner Narhari Singh Banger, and MCF commissioner Mona Sreenivas.
A senior MCG official explained that the committee’s mandate includes weighing the advantages and disadvantages of substituting the concessionaire, terminating the contract, or continuing with the existing arrangement. The ultimate goal is to provide informed recommendations to the state government for appropriate action.
MCG took a proactive step on February 5 by formally requesting the ULB department to consider terminating the contract with Ecogreen. In their communication to ULB commissioner and secretary Vikas Gupta, MCG highlighted the lack of progress made by Ecogreen despite the issuance of a preliminary termination notice on December 4, 2023.
In response to these developments, an Ecogreen representative expressed surprise regarding the committee’s formation and emphasized that any decision regarding their contract is a matter for the government to decide. They attributed the challenges faced to MCG’s alleged failure to make payments for their services.
These recent actions underscore the gravity of the situation and the determination of authorities to address the issues surrounding solid waste management effectively. The committee’s forthcoming report will play a crucial role in shaping the future course of action in this critical area of civic governance.
