‘Thank You For Coming,’ as the title suggests, appears to be a direct response to that phrase. Why should boys get all of the fun? Why shouldn’t females? Yes, indeed. This Ekta Kapoor-Rhea Kapoor film is a sprightly, astute, and passionate rebuke against the zillions of films that glorify boys and their filthy toys. It focuses on its female leads and allows them to be funny, joyful, and themselves, and it succeeds nearly entirely.
Kanika Kapoor (Bhumi Pednekar) is one of those worthless Dilli girls who is always on the outside looking in, wishing for more. She’s been nicknamed ‘kaandu,’ ‘thandi,’ and other horrible nicknames that only schoolkids can come up with without thinking about how they can scar the intended victim. As she goes through many romances in quest of the perfect one, her best friends (Dolly Singh) and (Shibani Bedi) serve as sounding boards and agony aunts.
It would be an insult to the picture to label it a sex comedy, even though there is sex, and thank you for that. There’s the kind of welcome discourse about the Big O and self-satisfaction that we should see more of in our regressive, prissy films that represent cultural mores, even if a couple scenes are on-the-nose awkward, particularly between Kanika and her unmarried, ready-to-mingle mother (Natasha Rastogi).
