Thane court clears two brothers in attempted murder case citing insufficient evidence

In a recent development, a court in Maharashtra’s Thane district has acquitted two brothers, Yogesh Deepak Vaity (32) and Jayesh Deepak Vaity (37), in a 2018 attempted murder case. The verdict, delivered on January 17 by Additional Sessions Judge A S Bhagwat, was made public on Sunday.
The prosecution had alleged that the brothers attacked a man with a knife on June 12, 2018, at a petrol pump in the Kashimira locality of Thane district, with the intent to kill him. However, the defense counsel vehemently contested the charges, asserting that the brothers were falsely implicated and had no involvement in the alleged crime.
During the trial, inconsistencies and lack of convincing accounts surfaced among the complainant and other prosecution witnesses, as highlighted in the judge’s order. After a thorough review of the evidence and witness testimonies, Judge Bhagwat concluded that the prosecution failed to establish the guilt of the brothers beyond a reasonable doubt.
The judge specifically noted the discrepancies in testimonies and the absence of corroborating evidence, leading to the benefit of doubt being granted to the accused. The acquittal underscores the importance of a robust legal process in ensuring justice and protecting individuals from unfounded accusations.
