Japanese firm TDK, known for supplying cells to Apple, is gearing up to establish a sprawling factory spanning 180 acres in Manesar. This facility aims to manufacture units specifically designated for iPhone batteries. Rajiv Chandrashekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, officially confirmed this development via a social media post. With an estimated investment of approximately Rs 7,000 crore planned in phases, TDK has already acquired the land, foreseeing substantial growth in Haryana with the creation of over 10,000 job opportunities.
The initiative aligns with Apple’s strategic move to diversify its production, contemplating a shift away from China, thereby eyeing India as a potential growth catalyst. These cells, designed for Apple’s batteries, are intended for supply to Sunwoda Electronics, responsible for assembling Apple batteries within India.
Chandrasekhar emphasized the significance of this move, tweeting, “TDK, a prominent Apple cell supplier, is establishing a facility in Manesar, Haryana, contributing to the #MadeInIndia iPhones. The venture is poised to generate numerous job opportunities.” Local production of lithium-ion battery cells is projected to amplify the indigenous contribution to Apple’s product lineup. TDK awaits the green signal on environmental clearance before commencing production.
TDK fortified its energy portfolio by acquiring China-based lithium-ion battery manufacturer, Amperex Technology Ltd (ATL), back in 2005. ATL, through its subsidiary Navitasys India Private Limited, already had a foothold in India, paving the way for TDK’s strategic expansion within the country.
