Sydney Sweeney, known for her roles in ‘Euphoria’ and ‘The White Lotus’, has expanded her career to executive producing the rom-com ‘Anyone But You’ and producing the horror film ‘Immaculate’. However, with fame came criticism, including a harsh remark from producer Carol Baum, who questioned Sydney’s looks and acting ability. Sydney addressed these comments in a recent interview with ‘Vanity Fair’.
When asked about her team’s response to Carol’s diss, Sydney reflected on how other successful women in the industry, like Anne Hathaway and Jennifer Lawrence, have also faced such criticisms. She expressed disappointment over women tearing each other down: “It’s very disheartening to see women tear other women down, especially when women who are successful in other avenues of their industry see younger talent working really hard—hoping to achieve whatever dreams that they may have—and then trying to bash and discredit any work that they’ve done.”
Sydney further criticized the industry’s rhetoric of “women empowering women,” calling it insincere. “This entire industry, all people say is ‘Women empowering other women.’ None of it’s happening. All of it is fake and a front for all the other s**t that they say behind everyone’s back,” she stated.
In the same interview, Sydney also discussed how she has been handling fame. She admitted to hiding parts of herself for a long time to preserve her privacy, and described her experience of “taking the power back” while hosting ‘Saturday Night Live’. During her appearance, she humorously addressed various rumors, including one about her alleged affair with Glen Powell.
The remarks from Carol Baum occurred during a screening of her 1988 film ‘Dead Ringers’ in April, when she commented, “Explain this girl to me. She’s not pretty. She can’t act. Why is she so hot?” In response, Sydney’s representatives told ‘Variety’, “How sad that a woman in the position to share her expertise and experience chooses instead to attack another woman.”
