Surveillance infrastructure upgrade is underway to bring down crime: Thane CP

Thane’s Commissioner of Police, Ashutosh Dumbre, outlined key initiatives aimed at reducing crime and enhancing policing in the region. The commissioner stressed three main areas for effective crime control: transparent registration of offenses, quality investigation and early case detection, and the implementation of preventative measures, with a specific focus on cyber and white-collar crimes.
To address increasing population and evolving challenges, the commissioner revealed plans for the addition of five new police stations and an increase in manpower strength. Furthermore, a significant upgrade in surveillance infrastructure is underway, with the installation of 6,000 additional CCTV cameras in the next 15-18 months.
To combat cybercrime, a dedicated help desk has been established in Kalyan, providing assistance for cyber frauds, mobile thefts, and tracking stolen phones. Training programs are also being conducted to keep personnel updated on the latest trends and technologies in cybercrime.
To tackle the drug menace, the police are prioritizing high-quantity drug seizure cases and aiming to disrupt the supply chain into the city. Additionally, strict action is being taken against drug consumers on a daily basis.
Addressing concerns about citizen-police interactions, a public feedback system has been implemented to ensure accountability and transparency. The system records details of individuals visiting police stations, and a dedicated team contacts complainants randomly to gather feedback, with immediate action taken against responsible officers in response to adverse feedback.
Traffic congestion on Ghodbunder Road is a persistent challenge, and the commissioner is personally monitoring the situation. A Traffic Committee, consisting of various stakeholders, will regularly meet to review and discuss measures to resolve the traffic jam issue.
For the safety of women, children, and senior citizens, plans include conducting a census of senior citizens and assigning a police representative to assist those in need. Awareness sessions on cyber threats are being held in schools, and collaborations with school authorities aim to gather information on any illegal activities around their premises.
To combat misinformation and sensitive content on social media, the police are strengthening their social media lab, increasing manpower, adopting the latest technology, and providing training on focused internet searches to detect and remove objectionable content.
In response to communal incidents, the commissioner advocates for community policing, emphasizing outreach to all sections of society. Efforts include the reactivation of Mohalla committees, peace committee meetings, and regular interactions with community leaders to build rapport.
