Supreme Court: Refused To Initiate The Contempt Proceedings Over Demolition Of 500-Year Old Sikh Mutt Near Puri Jagannath Temple

The Supreme Court in the case observed and has refused to initiate the contempt proceedings in a case which pertains to the demolition of the centuries old Mangu Mutt near Puri Jagannath Temple in Odisha who believed to have been visited by Guru Nanak 500 years ago.
The bench comprising of Justice MR Shah and Justice CT Ravikumar in the case observed and prompted for not initiating the contempt proceedings after noting that there was no “disobedience” in the order of the Court.
The court in its order stated while hearing the learned counsel for the petitioners and the court considered the averments in the application, we see no reason to initiate any contempt proceedings. The court dismissed the present contempt proceedings.
The counsel, Senior Advocate Anand Grover appeared for the petitioner.
It has been argued by the counsel, Senior Advocate Anand Grover appearing for the petitioner that the demolition of the mutt was in violation of the judgement of the Supreme Court in 2019.
Therefore, the said demolitions can go out but there must be preservation of the mutt.
The bench stated that, Mr counsel, there is a substantial encroachment.
Adding to which, Grover argued, the Mutt was not supposed to be demolished.
However, it being the case of the petitioner that in 2019, the court passed an order wherein recording that while clearing the area along with the Jagannath Temple’s vicinity, the said authorities would ensure that deities, samadhi of the mutt, its relics etc. and it would remain untouched and in their current place with regard to beautification which being made of the place with Kalinga style of architecture.
Accordingly, the court dismissed the plea.
