Successful statewide road safety competition promotes the 5 ‘E’s of road safety

Second phase of the Block Level Road Safety Competition, themed around road safety, was successfully conducted across the state. The event emphasized the five “E”s of road safety: Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Empathy, and Emergency Care.
A total of 1,972 students from schools and colleges across the state actively participated in the competition, spreading the message of road safety. Senior police officers from respective districts personally assessed the arrangements in place.
In line with the directives of Director General of Police Shatrujeet Kapur, police department nodal officers were assigned responsibilities in districts across the state to ensure the smooth execution of the competition. Students were categorized based on their educational qualifications and age. The competition posed questions designed to help students understand the significance of road safety and make informed decisions in real-life situations.
Prior to the launch of the campaign, study materials related to road safety regulations were not made available to students. Under the guidance of the Director General of Police, a comprehensive campaign plan was developed, involving individuals of all age groups across the state. As part of the ongoing road safety initiative, Director General of Police Shri Shatrujeet Kapur allocated financial support from the Road Safety Fund for the establishment of Police Cadet Corps and Driver Training Centers in educational institutions during his tenure as the Principal Secretary in the Transport Department. This step aimed to bring the concept of road safety into practical realization at the grassroots level.
Substantial efforts were also undertaken to enhance road engineering as per the specific requirements, ensuring the responsible department’s accountability. Immediate healthcare services for accident victims were also introduced post-accidents. Road safety knowledge centres and road safety clubs were established and operated in all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, and universities.
The creation of the Road Safety Fund facilitated the provision of adequate funds to various interested institutions and departments.
The competition was a resounding success, with students demonstrating a deep understanding of road safety principles and regulations. The event helped to raise awareness of road safety among students and the general public alike, and it is hoped that it will contribute to a reduction in road accidents and fatalities in the state.
