Standing Committee presents report on Teesta water-sharing

The Standing Committee of External Affairs has tabled its report on “Neighborhood policy” in the Parliament. One of its recommendations centred on the unresolved Teesta River water-sharing agreement with Bangladesh. The report was unanimously presented by the committee—of which BJP, Congress and TMC lawmakers, along with 26 other MPs are members. It is the TMC Government that created a roadblock to the resolution of the issue. But the standing committee directed the Ministry to initiate the process of finalising the agreement and report back to the committee. According to the committee, the agreement will enhance the bilateral relationship between India and Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is visiting India in September for the G-20 summit where she will have a bilateral meeting with PM Modi.
