Snatching incidents on rise in Chandigarh

The incidents of snatching are increasing in Chandigarh, known as City Beautiful. This year from January 1 to August 31, 103 people have become victims of such incidents. Most of the incidents took place in markets and parks and women were also involved.
Even though elderly women are easy prey for snatchers. But statistics show that last year 90 men and 49 women became victims of crimes. Similarly, in 2021, 73 men and 48 women became victims of snatchers. This year too, out of 103 incidents, 60 men and 43 women have been victims.
It has been seen that among the snatchers who have been caught so far in the city, minor children are also involved. Many of them are addicted to drugs and to fulfil this drug addiction, they are committing snatching incidents. There are many criminals who, after committing the crime, get released on bail and commit similar incidents again.
The court has been actively sentencing such criminals. Till August 31 this year, 50 snatchers have been sentenced by the District Court in 28 cases. Similarly, last year also the verdict was announced in 33 cases. In this, 51 people were sentenced. In 2021, hearing in 17 snatching cases was completed and 27 people were sentenced in this.
On the increasing incidents of snatching, Chandigarh SSP Kanwardeep Kaur says, “Special checkpoints are being set up by Chandigarh Police to catch snatchers. Due to zero tolerance of Chandigarh Police in such cases, more cases are being exposed.
