SC seeks fresh status report in Manipur violence case from govt

On Monday, the Supreme Court requested an updated status report from the state of Manipur on the current situation and actions done to reduce violence in the state.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra asked the State to provide an update on the status of rehabilitation camps, arms recovery, and law and order.

The judge scheduled a hearing for July 10 and requested that the government file a thorough status report. The Supreme Court was hearing a case filed by the Manipur Tribal Forum, Delhi, requesting that the Indian Army safeguard the Kuki tribe.

At the outset, senior advocate Colin Gonsalves, representing the Manipur Tribal Forum, informed the bench that the situation in Manipur had deteriorated.
However, the State’s Solicitor General told the Supreme Court that the “situation is improving, albeit slowly.”

According to the Solicitor General, the curfew has been decreased to 5 hours per day, indicating an improvement. Civil police, Manipur Commandos, Indian reserve battalions, and 114 Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) units are among those deployed in regions of conflict in Manipur, he added.
