The Supreme Court has hinted that it may constitute a committee led by a retired judge to probe the encounter death of Vikas Dubey, his five associates and the killing of eight policemen on 3 July by the gangster in Uttar Pradesh.
The court is likely to deliver the same order it gave in the Hyderabad encounter case, where it had directed setting up of the Justice V.S. Sirpurkar-led committee. The Uttar Pradesh government has been asked to file its reply on the action taken in the issue. Representing the UP government, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta said that he would file a status report by 16 July and the court will hear the case on 20 July.
The top court has hearing a batch of petitions questioning the encounter killing of Dubey and his aides by Uttar Pradesh Police after eight of their colleagues were killed by gangsters on 3 July.
The first petition was filed by a Maharashtra-based lawyer Ghanshyam Upadhyay, hours before Dubey was shot dead on July 10. UP Police had claimed that Dubey tried to jump custody after a vehicle in the convoy bringing him to Kanpur turned turtle.
