Rahul Gandhi, a Congressman, was held by Delhi Police on Tuesday amidst loud and furious demonstrations over Sonia Gandhi’s second Enforcement Directorate interrogation regarding the National Herald issue. According to news agency ANI, the Congress protest was organised, with MPs leaving Parliament with the goal of delivering a letter to the freshly sworn-in president Droupadi Murmu.
Mallikarjun Kharge, the head of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, along with Rahul Gandhi and numerous other MPs were transported to the Vijay Chowk police station in buses.
Rahul Gandhi said, “All (Congress) MPs came here. They talked about inflation, unemployment. They (the police) are not allowing us to sit here. Discussions are not allowed inside (the Parliament) and here they are arresting us. This is the reality of India that it is a police state, it is the truth… Modiji is a ‘raja’ (king).”
Kharge stated,“ We’re protesting as per the instruction of the police. All of this is a conspiracy by prime minister Narendra Modi and (union home minister) Amit Shah to completely destroy the opposition and muzzle our voices. We won’t be scared, our fight will continue.”
Images released by the news agency ANI depicted a chaotic scene on Vijay Chowk with a large number of reporters and cameras surrounding Rahul Gandhi and a small number of police officers making a ring around him as they took him away to be detained. One video depicted a struggle between police, some of whom were wearing Rapid Action Force uniforms, and members of the Congress.
