In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann declared on Friday that the family of Shubhkaran Singh, who tragically lost his life during the ongoing farmers’ protest at the Khanuri border, would receive substantial financial aid totalling ₹1 crore from the state government, alongside offering a government job to his younger sister. Additionally, Mann assured that stringent legal measures would be pursued against those responsible for the untimely demise of the young protester.
Making the announcement via a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mann emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting the family of Shubhkaran Singh, who was martyred amid the farmers’ movement at the Khanauri border.
The unfortunate incident occurred on Wednesday, resulting in the loss of the 21-year-old farmer’s life and leaving a dozen police personnel injured as clashes erupted at the Khanauri border point situated on the Punjab-Haryana border. Tensions escalated as some protesting farmers attempted to breach barricades set up in the area.
Hailing from Bathinda, Shubhkaran Singh’s demise sent shockwaves through the farming community, underscoring the risks involved in the ongoing agitation. Survived by his father, Charanjeet Singh, two sisters, and a grandmother, Shubhkaran was actively engaged in agricultural activities, possessing approximately 3 acres of land and managing livestock. Reports indicate that Shubhkaran Singh actively participated in the farmers’ protests at the Khanauri border since its commencement on February 13th, joining fellow demonstrators in advocating for their ten demands. Just a day before his tragic demise, he exhibited camaraderie by preparing breakfast for himself and his fellow protesters, highlighting the sense of unity among the farming community.
The recent announcement by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann comes amidst ongoing negotiations between farmers’ leaders and government representatives, aimed at resolving the impasse surrounding contentious agricultural reforms. Despite multiple rounds of talks held on February 8th, 12th, 16th, and 18th, discussions have thus far failed to yield a conclusive resolution, with farmers’ leaders rejecting proposals presented by the government.
As the farmers’ agitation continues to garner widespread attention, Mann’s announcement underscores the government’s recognition of the sacrifices made by individuals like Shubhkaran Singh and their families, while reaffirming the commitment to address their concerns through both financial assistance and legal recourse.
