Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stressed the importance of modernising the police force on scientific lines in order to provide better services to the public. He stated that the need of the hour is to address people’s complaints at their doorsteps through online services. The Chief Minister made this statement while inaugurating a stakeholder workshop on ‘Working together for rights of Women and Children’ and launching a Chatbot number 9517795178 for reporting missing, found and abused children.
In his speech, Mann acknowledged the glorious legacy of the Punjab Police in serving the country by making countless sacrifices. He emphasised that comprehensive reforms in the police force are necessary due to the increasing challenges faced by the force. He added that in addition to maintaining law and order, the police force needs to focus on community policing as well.
Mann also highlighted the importance of utilising modern technology in providing better services to the public.
He suggested that major thrust must be laid on redressal of grievances to the people at their doorsteps through online facilities. The Chief Minister further stated that the entire justice delivery system needed to be reformed from its roots and police is one of the core concern areas of this system which required some radical changes immediately.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister cited an example of the Sangrur parliamentary constituency where the state government has started installing state-of-the-art CCTV cameras to monitor the law and order situation effectively. He announced that this initiative will be replicated across the state to ensure public safety. The Chief Minister’s call for modernization of the police force is expected to bring about significant changes in the delivery of justice in the state of Punjab.
