PUCSC protests examination policy, urges fair treatment for students

The Panjab University Campus Students’ Council (PUCSC), under the leadership of President Jatinder Singh, has today highlighted a significant and pressing issue affecting a large segment of the student community, in response to the recent notification issued by the Office of the Controller of Examinations dated 22nd November 2023. This notification details the examination schedule and procedures for the academic session 2023-2024, including a policy that has caused widespread concern among students.
Central to this issue is the mandate that necessitates all intermediate semester students (excluding final year students) with medical reasons to postpone their examinations to the subsequent semesters. This policy has been met with significant disapproval, particularly as it overlooks the academic and mental stress it places on over 200 students from various courses who have legitimate medical reasons for their inability to sit for scheduled examinations.
Under the able guidance of Jatinder Singh, a dedicated and visionary leader, the PUCSC has been at the forefront of advocating for student rights and welfare within the university. Singh, known for his commitment to creating an equitable academic environment, has been instrumental in voicing the concerns of the student body and seeking constructive dialogue with the university administration.
The university’s current policy contrasts sharply with the provisions made for students in the Sports category/clash cases, who are permitted to take special examinations as per the schedule fixed by Panjab University without the imposition of additional fees. This disparity in treatment highlights an inconsistency in the university’s approach to student welfare, particularly in accommodating those facing health-related challenges.
PUCSC President Jatinder Singh is calling for an urgent review and revision of this policy. The council proposes that intermediate semester students with valid medical reasons should be allowed to take their examinations in the same semester, following approval from the Medical Board. This amendment is crucial in ensuring a balanced, fair, and empathetic approach to academic scheduling and student health considerations.
A formal letter expressing these concerns and recommendations has been dispatched to the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University. The letter by President Jatinder Singh emphasizes the need for immediate attention to this matter to prevent undue hardship and academic disadvantage to affected students.
