Pubic trials for 2000 protestors detained in Iranian protest

Iran’s judiciary declared that up to 1,000 people detained during anti-hijab protests in Tehran and more than a thousand others outside the capital will face public trials. The choice was made as world concern over Iran’s handling of the protesters intensified.

After Mahsa Amini, 22, died after being detained by Iran’s contentious morality police, there were nationwide demonstrations that started in September. Mahsa Amini was arrested for improperly donning a hijab.

Even after officials told demonstrators to vacate the streets, protests continued in Iran. Videos that went viral on social media demonstrated that the protests are still going strong.

However, according to one human rights organisation, security forces launched a merciless crackdown that resulted in at least 253 deaths.

German chancellor Olaf Scholz said he was shocked by the number of innocent protesters who were being arrested during the protests as the country has already announced that it will ask the European Union to sanction the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation.
