Pakistan’s newly appointed finance minister Ishaq Dar encountered an embarassing situation at the Washington airport in the US as he arrived in the country to attend meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Angry protesters “welcomed” the minister with chants of “liar” and “chor” (thief).
When Dar landed at the US airport, a loud protester could be heard “You’re lying. Both “Chor-Chor” and “You are a liar.” As shown in a video that was extensively circulated on social media, Dar and his aides were obviously furious by the barrage of obscenities directed at the minister. Dar replied to the person who was calling him names, “You are a liar. One of Dar’s companions was heard stating, “Mothr fker…I’ll f*k you right now, don’t try to be a smart a.” This was all documented on tape, and the video quickly gained popularity.
During foreign trips, a Pakistani minister has already been subjected to public insults.
The Information Minister, Marriyum Aurangzeb, had previously endured jeers at a coffee shop in London last month. Upon entering Masjid-e-Nabawi in Madina, the team led by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who was in Saudi Arabia for a three-day official visit, was given a “beautiful welcome.”
When they observed the delegation travelling to Masjid-e-Nabawi, pilgrims shouted “chor chor” (thieves).
Marriyum Aurangzeb, the minister of information, and Shahzain Bugti, a member of the National Assembly, were all visible in a video. The Pakistani daily claims that Aurangzeb subtly attributed the demonstration to former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
“I will not name this person on this holy land because I do not want to use this land for politics. But they have destroyed the [Pakistani] society,” The Express Tribune quoted Aurangzeb as saying.
