Protest at toll plaza: Punjab home guards demand pension hike and commission increase

For nearly the past five years, Home Guards in Ropar and Solkhia have been staging a protest by setting up tents at the toll plaza. This demonstration, organized by the Punjab Home Guard, demands an increase in pensions in line with the main demands and the mutual application of the sixth commission.
After engaging in prolonged demonstrations, Home Guard personnel today set up a large gathering at the toll plaza in Solkhia, where personnel from various districts of the state, armed with banners, participated in the protest. Prior to initiating the protest, a meeting was held with the employees to discuss the demands, following which the toll plaza demonstration commenced. The demonstration brought all the lines at the toll plaza to a halt and caused traffic jams on the national highway.
Following this, a delegation meeting with the concerned department is currently underway in Chandigarh. However, the Home Guards stated that they would continue the demonstration until their demands are met, and a decision would be made only after a consensus is reached at the next meeting.
One Home Guard personnel says that while they diligently serve the Punjab Police, their economic conditions are far from satisfactory. They urge the government to promptly fulfill their demands and accord them due respect.
