Private bus and truck drivers staged a “chakka jam” (traffic jam) throughout the state on Monday in opposition to a new law that criminalizes hit-and-run incidents, which carries a 7–10 year prison sentence for violators. By placing obstructions in the way, drivers on the Pithampur Highway in Dhar enforced a “chakka jam.” Members of a group that advocates for drivers also conducted a demonstration at the Board Office crossroads in Bhopal. Cab driver Gyansingh Yadav, who was among the demonstrators on Monday, was unable to control his tears.
