Prez Murmu advocates diverse judiciary for enhanced justice delivery

President Droupadi Murmu proposed the establishment of an all-India Judicial Service aimed at identifying and nurturing talented young individuals from various backgrounds, fostering their growth from lower to higher echelons within the judiciary.

Speaking at the Constitution Day celebrations held by the Supreme Court of India in New Delhi, she stressed the judiciary’s distinct position within the constitutional framework. President Murmu highlighted the significance of a more diverse representation on the bench and in the legal profession, stating that it would significantly enhance the cause of justice in the country.

She suggested expediting this diversification process through the implementation of a merit-based, competitive, and transparent recruitment system that welcomes judges from diverse backgrounds.

She articulated, “An all-India judicial service could identify and support gifted young minds, fostering their growth and progression from lower to higher judicial levels.”
Furthermore, she emphasised the potential of such a system to attract individuals aspiring to serve on the bench from various regions across the nation, thereby creating a broader talent pool.

“This framework could also open doors for underrepresented social groups, providing them with opportunities,” Murmu stated, addressing the attendees at the event. Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, Chief Justice of India Justice D Y Chandrachud, along with other judges from the apex court and high courts, also graced the occasion.
