President Droupadi Murmu congratulated Indian weightlifter Achinta Sheuli who clinched the third gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Monday.
“Achinta Sheuli has made India proud by winning golf and making the tricolor fly high at the Commonwealth Games. You immediately overcame the failure in one attempt and topped the lineup. You are the champion who has created history. Heartiest congratulations!” President Murmu tweeted.
In the men’s 73 kg final, Achinta Sheuli won the gold medal with a combined lift of 313 kg and scripted history.
Earlier in the morning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed the young athlete and shared a video of him interacting with the Indian players for the 2022 edition of the CWG games.
Taking to Twitter PM wrote, “Before our contingent left for the Commonwealth Games, I interacted with Achinta Sheuli. We had discussed the support he received from his mother and brother. I also hope he gets time to watch a film now that a medal has been won.”
Meanwhile, by lifting 313 kg (143kg +170kg) in his third Snatch attempt Achinta won the third gold medal at Commonwealth Games 2022.
Talking about his victory Achinta Sheuli said, “I am very happy. After overcoming many struggles, I won this medal. I will dedicate this medal to my brother and coaches. Next, I will prepare for the Olympics.”
Earlier, Indian women’s weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal and Indian weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga clinched the second gold medal for India at the Commonwealth Games 2022.
However, Erry Hidayat of Malaysia gained a silver medal and Canada’s Shad Darsigny gained a bronze medal.
