PM Vanche Gujarat Initiative : Government to Open Libraries in 21 Districts to promote reading

In a significant move to promote reading, the Gujarat government has announced plans to establish libraries in 50 talukas across 21 districts. This initiative, led by Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, builds on the “Vanche Gujarat” campaign launched by then Chief Minister and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi to enrich libraries throughout the state.

Marking a historic decision, libraries will also be established in 14 talukas within 7 tribal districts, aiming to boost interest in reading among the tribal communities. This initiative will provide 100 percent access to reading services in these areas.

The announcement aligns with the celebration of ‘National Read a Book Day’ on September 6, a day dedicated to fostering a love for reading. The Gujarat government also plans to expand library services in rural areas by starting more subsidized public libraries, making it easier for citizens to access reading materials.

In a first, the state government has waived the 25 percent public contribution required for grant-aided libraries, offering 100 percent state funding starting from 2023-24. Additionally, the government has increased grant rates for different types of libraries, including special, city, women and children, and village libraries.

As part of its broader effort to enhance library services, the state has also raised the award amounts for the Shree Motibhai Amin Granthalaya Seva Award and Uttam Granthalaya Seva Certificate, encouraging competition and excellence in library management.

This comprehensive policy is designed to foster a reading culture across the state, providing access to knowledge through books, periodicals, and teaching materials.
