On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi claimed that BRICS has been actively promoting a robust agenda for collaboration across various sectors and acts as a forum for discussion of issues important to the entire Global South.
PM Modi said that he looks forward to holding bilateral meetings with “some of the leaders present in Johannesburg”.
“BRICS has been pursuing a strong cooperation agenda across various sectors. We value that BRICS has become a platform for discussing and deliberating on issues of concern for the entire Global South, including development imperatives and reform of the multilateral system,” the PM said in a statement.
PM Modi will leave for South Africa to participate in the 15th BRICS Summit at the invitation of the country’s president Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa.
BRICS is a grouping of the world economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.
August 22–24 will see the BRICS summit. The trip commemorates the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic ties between India and South Africa and will be PM Modi’s third visit to the country.
The PM in his departure statement ahead of his visit said: “I am visiting the Republic of South Africa from August 22-24, 2023 at the invitation of Cyril Ramaphosa, President of South Africa, to attend the 15th BRICS Summit being held in Johannesburg under the South African Chairmanship.”
