Pioneering Efforts for Clean Air and Environmental Conservation

Jai Dhar Gupta, a leading clean-air activist and entrepreneur in India, emerged as a pivotal figure in combating air pollution after his diagnosis of bronchial asthma in 2013. With a dual degree from the University of Pennsylvania, he tirelessly advocates for environmental awareness and spearheads initiatives like the Rajaji Raghati Biosphere and the Clean Air Collective.

Q.: Can you tell us about the inception of Nirvana Being and what inspired you to start this venture?
Jai Dhar Gupta: The inspiration for Nirvana Being came from my personal experience with air pollution. In 2013, I was diagnosed with bronchial asthma, and it didn’t take long for me to connect this to the deteriorating air quality in Delhi. This realization spurred me to action. I began researching and advocating for clean air, which led to the formation of the citizens movement, Our Right to Breathe. My personal need to protect myself and my family from air pollution further motivated me to establish Nirvana Being in 2014. Our mission is to provide sustainable and innovative air purification solutions that enable everyone to enjoy clean, healthy air without compromising their lifestyle or the environment.

Q.: What are some of the key achievements of Nirvana Being since its founding?
Jai Dhar Gupta: Over the past decade, Nirvana Being has made significant strides in raising awareness about air pollution and providing practical solutions. We’ve introduced a range of products, from high-efficiency masks to advanced air purifiers, which have helped thousands of people breathe cleaner air. Our efforts have also been recognized by various environmental organizations and government bodies. We were instrumental in launching the first Air Pollution Taskforce with the AAP Government in Delhi in 2015. Our products and advocacy work have contributed to a greater understanding of air quality issues and the need for proactive measures to address them.

Q.: The Rajaji Raghati Biosphere is an exciting new initiative. What motivated you to start this project
Jai Dhar Gupta: The Rajaji Raghati Biosphere stems from my deep commitment to combating climate change and protecting biodiversity. While Nirvana Being addresses the immediate need for clean air, I felt it was also crucial to tackle the root causes of environmental degradation. The Biosphere is an ambitious effort to rewild and expand forest cover in the buffer zone of the Rajaji Tiger Reserve. It aims to create a vital carbon sink and foster biodiversity. This project also offers a pristine environment for conducting climate change research, outside the polluted airshed of Delhi NCR. It represents a holistic approach to environmental conservation and sustainability.

Q.: What are the primary objectives of the Rajaji Raghati Biosphere, and how do you plan to achieve them?

Jai Dhar Gupta: The primary objectives of the Rajaji Raghati Biosphere are twofold. Firstly, we aim to rewild the area, increasing forest cover and supporting biodiversity. This involves planting native species, restoring habitats, and protecting wildlife. Secondly, the Biosphere serves as a research hub for climate change data. By studying this relatively untouched environment, we can gather valuable insights into the natural processes and impacts of climate change. Achieving these objectives requires collaboration with environmental scientists, local communities, and government agencies. We are also engaging in public education campaigns to raise awareness about the importance of rewilding and climate action.

Q.: How do you see the future of air quality and environmental conservation evolving in India?
Jai Dhar Gupta: I believe the future of air quality and environmental conservation in India hinges on increased awareness and proactive measures. There is growing recognition of the health impacts of air pollution and the urgent need for sustainable practices. Innovations in clean technology and stricter regulations can significantly improve air quality. Additionally, projects like the Rajaji Raghati Biosphere demonstrate the potential for private initiatives to contribute to large-scale environmental conservation. Ultimately, a collective effort involving government, businesses, and individuals is essential to create a sustainable and healthy environment for future generations. For broader change on air pollution, we need to make Clean Air an election issue. Also, Governments need to influence a change in behavior, by introducing regulations that incentivize good behavior and penalize bad behavior.

Q.: What message would you like to convey to individuals and organizations about the importance of clean air and environmental sustainability?
Jai Dhar Gupta: My message is simple: awareness precedes change. Understanding the impact of air pollution and environmental degradation is the first step toward making a difference. Individuals can adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives, support clean air initiatives, and advocate for stronger environmental policies. Organizations have a responsibility to innovate and implement solutions that protect the environment. Together, we can ensure that everyone has access to clean, healthy air and a sustainable future.
