On Saturday, PGIMER celebrated its 10th Annual Research Day, featuring displays of more than 400 research papers. Recognizing outstanding contributions, 36 researchers were awarded in the categories of surgical, medical, and basic sciences research, with an additional 15 researchers honored for their innovative and credible work under the ‘Innovation’ category.
The 10th Annual Research Day at PGIMER witnessed a grand celebration at the Big Medical Research Blocks, characterized by enthusiastic participation and insightful presentations. Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Secretary, Department of Health Research, and Director-General, Indian Council of Medical Research, graced the occasion as the chief guest. The event was organized by prominent faculty members of PGIMER, including Prof. Y.K. Chawla, Prof. V. Sakhuja, Prof. D. Behera, Prof. S.K. Jindal, Prof. A. Chakravarti, and Prof. Madhu Khullar.
Dr. Rajiv Bahl addressed the gathering on the subject of “Research in Medical Institutions in India,” emphasizing the need for Indian institutions to achieve global leadership in health research. He highlighted that solving the health issues of Indian citizens is incomplete without international cooperation. Dr. Bahl urged the audience to either bring glory to India or ensure the health and well-being of its citizens through impactful research.
Dr. Bahl commended PGIMER for its foresighted efforts in groundbreaking research and stated, “Where global rankings are concerned, I envision at least three Indian medical institutions in the top 100 in the next three years, and PGIMER will undoubtedly be one of them. However, our research should focus on three things.”
The Director-General of ICMR explained that focusing on tools and diagnostics, improving the quality of healthcare, and achieving a revolutionary change in universal health coverage through research and development could be transformative for addressing major health issues in the country.
Dr. Bahl expressed his belief that advancing research in these areas can help eliminate communicable diseases, prevent and manage non-communicable diseases, and contribute to population health by providing solutions through medicines, vaccines, and medical interventions.
