Pandemic situation has improved, says Centre

The Centre on Thursday said that the Covid-19 pandemic situation has improved and there is contraction in spread of Covid infection—in 268 districts, the positivity rate is below 5%.

34 states and UTs, including Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, are recording a decline in Covid-19 cases and positivity rate, the Union Health Ministry said on Thursday. Addressing a press briefing, the health ministry said that consistent decline in daily active Covid-19 cases and positivity rate indicate a decreased spread of the infection.

However, Kerala and Mizoram are still recording an increase in Covid-19 cases. 297 districts reporting Covid-19 positivity rate of over 10% and 169 districts have a positivity rate between 5-10%. As much as 65% of adolescents aged 15-18 years have been administered first dose of Covid-19 vaccine. The decline in Covid-19 case fatality rate has been noted with an increase in administration of vaccine doses.

In this Covid wave, sore throat was seen more in patients, there was significantly less use of drugs for treatment. The population with an average age of 44 years was infected more in the third wave compared to previous waves; the last time it was 55 years, as per the Union health ministry

Dr V.K. Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog, said: “Government keeps reviewing the guidelines regarding re-opening on schools. These emphasise how schools have to be run as per evidence-based SOPs. We hope that by using these guidelines there is a safe way of reopening schools.”

Meanwhile, the Centre on Thursday told the Supreme Court that around 77 lakh people who did not have any valid identity cards have been administered with the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine and 14.55 lakh have been administered with both the doses.

Perusing the affidavit of the Centre, a bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, Surya Kant and Vikram Nath, however, said that as per the affidavit only 4.82 lakh people, without an ID card, have been vaccinated.
