Onion export ban sparks protests; govt vows relief, opposition demands rollback

The recent ban on onion exports imposed by the Indian government has sparked protests and political reactions in Maharashtra, with opposition leaders and farmers expressing their concerns over the impact on the agricultural community. The ban, effective until March 31, 2024, aims to ensure ample onion availability domestically and stabilize prices.
Opposition leaders, including those from Maharashtra’s Nagpur, took to the streets during the assembly winter session, staging a protest against the onion export ban. Demands were raised for an increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for onions and financial aid to farmers affected by seasonal rain. Slogans resonated against the government during the demonstration at Vidhan Bhavan.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the concerns, assuring that the government is in talks with the central government. Shinde stated, “We will find out a way so that farmers and customers do not face losses due to the ban on export of onions.” He emphasized the government’s commitment to providing relief to farmers and consumers. Former Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while acknowledging the challenges faced by farmers, revealed that the Centre is ready to purchase unsold onions from farmers. Fadnavis assured that the central government is open to buying onions that remain unsold or cannot be auctioned, easing the burden on farmers. He highlighted discussions with Union Minister for Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal, stating, “Goyalji assured me that until a further decision is taken and if onions remain unsold, the Central government is ready to buy the crop from farmers.”
NCP president Sharad Pawar joined the chorus, demanding a roll-back of the onion export ban. Pawar, addressing onion growers in Nashik district, accused the central government of ignoring the hard work of farmers. He urged cultivators to unite and assert their rights, emphasizing that the ban on onion exports should be lifted immediately.
