After the Lower House was adjourned for the 4th consecutive day in the present Monsoon Session, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla met with all party leaders on Tuesday, amid commotion in the Opposition benches over the Manipur situation.
The conference was called by the Speaker after the Lok Sabha was adjourned until 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The Lower House was adjourned until 2 p.m. as opposition members continued to raise shouts seeking a debate on Manipur and a response from Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
After Question Hour began, members of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha erupted in protest. Speaker Birla encouraged Opposition members to return to their seats, adding that they should allow the House to hold Question Hour in order to improve the government’s accountability.
In the midst of Opposition members carrying banners and shouting slogans, the Speaker stated that such protests were not a solution nor consistent with parliamentary conventions and traditions.
