Nurse practitioner role in prevention and management of NCD course to be held in PGIMER

The sixth two-day course on the ‘Role of Nurse Practitioner in the Prevention and Management of Chronic Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs)’ with the theme “Nurse Practitioners for Chronic NCDs” will be organized by the National Institute of Nursing Education (NINE), PGIMER in collaboration with the World NCD Federation from 11th to 12th January 2024.

The course aims to sensitize and prepare nurses for NCD management, enabling them to play a significant role in the prevention and management of these diseases. Dr. Sukhpal Kaur and Dr. JS Thakur are the Organizing Chairpersons of the course, and Dr. Kavita and Dr. Sushma Saini are the Organizing Secretaries. A total of 118 participants from Punjab, Chandigarh, and Himachal Pradesh have already registered for the course.

The course will be inaugurated by Prof. Vivek Lal, Director of PGIMER, Chandigarh. This marks the 6th course in the series organized by NINE in collaboration with the World NCD Federation, reflecting a continuous feature of the Institute and World NCD Federation.

Dr. Deepika Khakha, Nursing Adviser, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI, will participate in the panel discussion to discuss the nurse practitioner’s role in the Indian context as a representative from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, GOI. She will also chair the session on “Task Shifting for Chronic NCDs.”

Other topics to be discussed during the course include cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cancer, mental illnesses, multisectoral action plans, NP-NCD, and population-based screening for common NCDs. The Indian Nursing Council has allocated 10 CNE hours/2 CNE credits to the course, as per letter no. 22-203/CNE/2023-INC(605849) dated 01.01.2024. The course aims to educate participants on the role of nurses in the management of NCDs, with sessions led by experts in their respective fields.
