NRI Shot in Amritsar: Suspects Include Family Members of Ex-Wife

A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) from the US was shot at by two youths after they forcibly entered his home in the Daburji area of Amritsar, according to police reports on Saturday. The incident occurred around 7 a.m. when the victim, Sukhchain Singh, was preparing to go to the gym. The two assailants arrived on a bike and entered Singh’s residence under the pretense of inquiring about the registration papers of his luxury car.

Once inside, the attackers fired three shots at Singh with the intent to kill him. Two of the bullets struck Singh, but the weapon jammed, prompting the assailants to flee the scene. Singh’s wife, Amandeep Kaur, reported that five people were at home during the attack, including two children and an elderly mother. Despite the children’s pleas, the attackers persisted in their assault until their weapon malfunctioned.

Amritsar Commissioner of Police, Ranjit Singh Dhillon, confirmed the details of the attack, stating, “Sukhchain Singh lives in Daburji and had recently returned from America a month ago. The assailants entered his house under the guise of asking about his car’s registration and then began shooting.” Dhillon noted that the attackers included three men, with two entering the residence and the third remaining outside. Singh was promptly transported to the hospital, where he received treatment and is now reported to be out of danger.

The police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against five individuals, who are reportedly family members of Singh’s ex-wife. Singh’s family suspects that these individuals were involved in the attack. Sukhchain Singh’s father-in-law, Sukhdev Singh, voiced concerns about the potential involvement of his ex-wife’s family in the incident, emphasizing the need for justice.

Dr. Krishnan Srinivasan, who treated Singh, described the victim’s condition upon arrival at the hospital: “Sukhchain Singh was admitted with severe bleeding. Fortunately, he is now stable. He sustained injuries to his face and hand.” The investigation into the shooting continues as authorities work to identify and apprehend the suspects.
