Nepal Earthquake: India Provides Helpline for Indians in Need of Immediate Assistance

India acted quickly in the aftermath of Nepal’s 6.4-magnitude earthquake, which killed 132 people and injured many more. As a precaution, India issued an emergency contact number, +977-9851316807, through the Indian embassy in Nepal, with the goal of assisting Indian nationals in need of immediate assistance.

Dr. OP Mishra, the Director of India’s National Center for Seismology (NCS), highlighted two crucial factors influencing the severity of the earthquake in the Himalayan region: the time of occurrence and the construction of buildings. He emphasized that it’s not the earthquake itself but the structural integrity of buildings that primarily poses a threat to lives.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal, the prime minister of Nepal, arrived in Jajarkot earlier today in order to personally assess the situation, meet with those affected, and spend time with the affected. Officials have been asked to deploy ambulances near the helipad of Nepalgunj Airport and military barracks.

Expressing condolences, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed deep sadness over the loss of lives and the destruction caused by the earthquake. He pledged India’s full support and readiness to extend any necessary aid to Nepal in this challenging time.

The earthquake, measured at a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter Scale with its epicenter in Nepal at a depth of 10 km, led to tremors felt across various districts in North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. The impact of the seismic event underscores the importance of immediate assistance and structural resilience in such calamities.
