Nepal Earthquake: Death Toll Reaches 143, Aftershocks Shake Affected Areas

Nepal is grappling with the devastating aftermath of a 6.4-magnitude earthquake, which has tragically claimed the lives of 143 individuals, as reported by the Nepal Police. The catastrophe has caused widespread destruction, leaving numerous people injured and communities in disarray.

Further aftershocks, including one registering at 3.3 in magnitude on Saturday afternoon, have only exacerbated the challenges faced by the affected population, adding strain to an already precarious situation.

In order to address the crisis, the Deputy Prime Minister and the Home Minister called a meeting in Kathmandu, according to Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the spokesperson for the Nepal Home Ministry. Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister held a meeting in Kathmandu over the earthquake that hit the country.

Efforts are underway to provide urgent medical assistance to those injured, with security personnel actively involved in transporting the injured to the TV Teaching Hospital in Kathmandu for treatment.

Nepal’s neighbor, India, extended its support by releasing an emergency contact number for Indians in Nepal requiring urgent assistance following the initial earthquake.

OP Mishra, Director of the National Center for Seismology (NCS), stressed the role of building structures in determining the severity of the earthquake’s impact, emphasizing the criticality of resilient infrastructure in preventing casualties.

Nepal’s Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ visited Jajarkot to assess the situation and provide support to those affected. Directives were issued to deploy ambulances near Nepalgunj Airport’s helipad and military barracks to ensure swift medical aid.

Expressing deep condolences, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered support to Nepal and expressed India’s readiness to provide all possible assistance during this trying time.

The earthquake’s effects were not limited to Nepal alone, as tremors were felt in several districts of North India, including Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. This cross-border impact underscores the widespread reach and consequences of the seismic event.
