Municipal Corporation is committed to ensuring fire safety and rescue services protection in Chandigarh

CHANDIGARH: In an effort to safeguard the lives of its fire personnel, the Municipal Corporation Chandigarh has procured 28 Pyrolene/Splash Tight Suits and 14 Chemical/Gas Tight Suits. These suits are aimed at protecting firefighters from various biochemical threats they may encounter while on duty. This procurement marks the first instance where the emergency response department of the Municipal Corporation has invested in such equipment, with an estimated cost of approximately Rs. 51 lakhs.

This milestone exemplifies the unwavering dedication of MC Chandigarh to staying at the forefront of emergency preparedness. By providing firefighters with state-of-the-art protective gear, the Corporation aims to bolster their capabilities in handling complex challenges with confidence and efficiency. Ultimately, this investment will mitigate the loss of valuable life and property during emergency situations.

This initiative is part of the Municipal Corporation’s broader mission to ensure fire preparedness in the city. Recently, MCC has also acquired 7 Bullet Motorcycles and 14 Water Mist and CAF High-Pressure units, specifically designed for firefighting in narrow lanes.

Furthermore, MCC has customized a Tata 407 chassis to create a Mini Water Tender for firefighting in narrow lanes and VVIP duties. Additionally, a Tata 1613 chassis has been fabricated with a Water Tender for firefighting duties. Moreover, 4 Tata Xenon vehicles have been customized with Mini Water Tender setups based on Water Mist Technology for firefighting in narrow lanes.

The MCC has also invested in an inflatable emergency lighting tower, which is used during major disasters such as building collapses, fire incidents, and rescue operations at night.

Additionally, 5 thermal imaging detectors have been procured for detecting hazards in areas with low visibility, such as smoke or smog. The purchase of 28 Fire Proximity Suits, essential Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for Fire and Rescue Services Personnel, further demonstrates the Corporation’s commitment to firefighter safety.

Furthermore, the Department has acquired 30 Fire Helmets with central touch controls for hands-free operation during firefighting. Additionally, 03 Water Tenders (Type-X), 56 Breathing Apparatus Sets, 24 specialized tools/Combi tools for Rescue Operations, and 3 Breathing Air Compressors (two electric motor-driven and one petrol-driven) have been purchased. 5 Water Tenders (Type-B) have also been added to the fleet. Moreover, refurbishment/replacement orders for the superstructure/chassis of 2 Hydraulic Platform-cum-Turn Table Ladder vehicles have been placed, and 7 portable tents have been purchased for standby duties.

To strengthen the Department further, MCC has recruited 245 Firemen and 35 Drivers through regular recruitment in 2022.

Additionally, a Fire Safety Audit of all commercial/government establishments in the city has been conducted. Approximately 6000 buildings have been issued fire advisories to meet the required safety standards promptly.

To raise awareness and improve fire response among citizens, regular mock drills are conducted in hospitals, schools, industries, and with Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) and Market Welfare Associations (MWAs).
