Mumbai’s air quality moderate, Chembur records higher AQI of 263

On Tuesday, Mumbai found itself under a veil of smog, with the city’s air quality categorized as ‘moderate.’ According to data compiled by the Central Pollution Control Board’s SAMEER app, the Air Quality Index (AQI) for the city reached 129 at 10 am.
The SAMEER App dashboard revealed that Kurla, Worli, Mazgaon, Chakala, Byculla, Bhandup, and Borivali areas showcased satisfactory air quality. Kurla and Chakala reported an AQI of 100, while Bhandup and Mazgaon recorded an AQI of 75. Byculla’s AQI stood at 90, Worli at 87, and Borivali at 98.

However, Shivaji Nagar and Chembur areas reported ‘poor’ air quality, with AQI values of 222 and 263, respectively. SAMEER app data indicated that Thane’s air quality was ‘poor’ on Tuesday, with an AQI of 226, while Navi Mumbai registered a ‘moderate’ air quality with an AQI of 178. Nerul, situated in Navi Mumbai, recorded a satisfactory AQI of 85. Kalamboli and Sanpada reported poor AQI values of 268 and 211, respectively.
The air quality index is categorized as follows: 0 to 100 is considered ‘good,’ 100 to 200 ‘moderate,’ 200 to 300 ‘poor,’ 300 to 400 ‘very poor,’ and 400 to 500 or above is deemed ‘severe.’

Contributors to air pollution in Mumbai include waste burning, industrial activities, construction dust, and vehicle emissions. These sources release fine particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10) into the air, posing health risks such as heart problems and respiratory diseases.

Various initiatives are underway to enhance Mumbai’s air quality. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has implemented measures like emission limits for cars, restricted dust zones at construction sites, and the promotion of electric vehicles. The Maharashtra government has also introduced the “Clean Air Action Plan” to mitigate pollution from diverse sources.

As per the India Meteorological Department’s (IMD) daily forecast for the city and nearby areas, clear skies are expected today, with the highest temperature reaching approximately 33 degrees Celsius and a minimum temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius.
