Mumbai housing societies set to receive 1.2L waste bins

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is gearing up to distribute over 1,20,000 waste bins, comprising both wet and dry bins, to housing societies across the city. Having already secured the bins at a cost of Rs 8 crore, civic officials announced that societies can avail the bins within 10 days of making a request to the BMC.
While the concept is not entirely new, it is being reintroduced after a hiatus of one year. In the past, housing societies would approach local corporators to request wet and dry waste bins. Now, the initiative is being revived as part of the Prime Minister’s Swachh Bharat, Swasth Bharat campaign.

Guardian Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha emphasized the importance of waste segregation at the society level, aligning with the Swachh Bharat initiative. Deputy Municipal Commissioner Sanjog Kabare revealed that three companies have been enlisted to supply the 1,20,000 waste bins, with a total expenditure of approximately Rs 8 crore. Each bin has a capacity of 120 litres.

Housing societies and slum pockets interested in receiving the bins can submit requests to the BMC, and the bins will be promptly provided. Lodha also hinted at the possibility of procuring additional bins in the future to cater to more societies, emphasizing the BMC’s capacity to meet the demand.
