Modi calls for tech democratisation, women-led development

Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India made a compelling appeal to the G20 development ministers for the democratisation of technology to narrow the data divide. He emphasised the importance of high-quality data in efficient resource allocation, effective public service delivery, and meaningful policymaking. Modi believes that accessible technology can serve as a tool for empowering people and ensuring inclusivity. The PM is eager to share India’s successful experience with digitalization, which has led to revolutionary changes within the country.
Modi also stressed the importance of reforms within multilateral financial institutions, advocating for expanded eligibility criteria to make finance more accessible to those in need. The Global South, particularly impacted by the disruptions caused by the COVID pandemic and geopolitical tensions, requires urgent attention, he noted. Modi called for a united front to ensure no one is left behind in the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The prime minister also emphasised the necessity for increased investment to achieve SDGs and find solutions to the debt risks faced by numerous countries. He further pointed to India’s efforts to uplift more than a hundred previously underdeveloped districts as a model for study, claiming they have emerged as catalysts of growth.
Modi highlighted the importance of gender equality and women’s empowerment in achieving the SDGs, terming India’s approach as “women-led development.” Women, according to Modi, are not only beneficiaries but also drivers of development and change. The Prime Minister urged his G20 counterparts to adopt a robust action plan for such a development model.
Modi, an advocate for a pro-planet lifestyle, welcomed the G20’s work on high-level principles on Lifestyle for Environment (LiFE). In his words, such principles would significantly contribute to climate action.
The prime minister further added that the historic city of Varanasi, his political constituency, is an apt venue for the G20 development ministers’ meeting due to its long-standing role as a centre for knowledge, debate, and spirituality. He urged visiting ministers to explore the city and draw inspiration from its rich traditions.
Modi’s address reflected his commitment to addressing pressing global issues through cooperation, technological democratisation, and gender equality, with a focus on sustainable development.
