Amrohi emphasized the vast difference between the two works, stating, “There is a difference of earth and sky between them.” He discouraged the comparison, asserting that “Pakeezah” is incomparable due to the irreplaceable talents of Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi. Amrohi recalled a visit by Sanjay Leela Bhansali to Kamalistan Studio, where Bhansali showed great reverence for his father’s work. While Amrohi respected Bhansali’s admiration, he emphasized the uniqueness of each cinematic creation.
Amrohi disagreed with Sharmin Segal’s statement regarding her portrayal in “Heeramandi,” particularly her reference to Meena Kumari’s performance in “Pakeezah.” He stated, “No, I can’t relate to her statement on nothingness.” Segal had previously mentioned drawing inspiration from Meena Kumari’s character for her role in “Heeramandi.”
Meanwhile, Sharmin’s co-star Richa Chadha also paid tribute to Meena Kumari in “Heeramandi.” Chadha highlighted the enriching experience of observing and learning from Meena Kumari’s character in “Pakeezah.” She emphasized the depth and complexity of Kumari’s portrayal, which influenced her performance in “Heeramandi.”
“Heeramandi” is a series set in the pre-partition era, focusing on the red-light district of Heera Mandi in Lahore. It explores the power dynamics among courtesans, Nawabs, and British officers against the backdrop of the Indian independence revolution. The series features a star-studded cast including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sharmin Segal, Richa Chadha, and others.
“Heeramandi” has been renewed for a second season, following its success and critical acclaim.
