Manipur Imposes 5-Day Internet Ban To Stop Anti-Social Elements Amid Rising Violence

The Manipur government has announced a five-day ban on internet services to curb the spread of hate speech, disinformation, and inflammatory content that could incite further violence. The move comes as tensions rise between the Meitei and Kuki communities, which have been embroiled in clashes for over a year.

Internet Ban to Prevent Escalation of Violence
The state government imposed the internet ban after concerns emerged that anti-social elements could use social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter to spread provocative images and hate speech. The ban aims to prevent the mobilization of violent mobs and safeguard public and private property from acts of arson and vandalism.

A government statement highlighted the urgency of the situation, stating that the ban was essential to “thwart the designs of anti-national and anti-social elements” and maintain communal harmony in the state.

Renewed Clashes Between Meitei and Kuki Communities
Manipur, a state divided along ethnic lines, has witnessed recurring violence between the Hindu Meitei majority and the Christian Kuki community. These clashes have intensified over the past year, creating a volatile environment. Just last week, at least 11 people were killed in renewed hostilities, marking a significant escalation in violence after a period of relative calm.

Curfew and Protests in Imphal
On Tuesday, a curfew was imposed in the state capital, Imphal, and surrounding areas following student-led protests that clashed with police forces. The protesters demanded action against insurgents accused of using improvised weapons and drones in attacks last week, which police described as a “significant escalation.”

Authorities are taking precautionary measures to ensure public safety, with the curfew and internet ban expected to help de-escalate tensions and restore order in the troubled region.
