Manipur Govt Restores Internet and Mobile Data Services After Review

The Manipur government restored internet and mobile data services on Monday after assessing the current law and order situation in the state. The State’s Home Department issued an order lifting the suspension of these services, including VSAT and VPN, in Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts. The suspension, which was originally extended until September 20, has now been revoked.

The order stated, “The State Government, via order No. H3607/4/2022-HD-HD(Pt.) (!) dated September 10, 2024, suspended internet and mobile data services, including Lease Lines, VSAT, broadband, and VPN services in the territorial jurisdiction of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching districts of Manipur for five days with effect from 3:00 PM on September 10, 2024, and subsequently extended till 3:00 PM on September 20, 2024, vide an order of even number dated September 15, 2024. The State Government reviewed this suspension and conditionally lifted it for Broadband (ILL & FTTH) services via order No. H-1701/181/2023-HD-HD-Part (1) dated September 12, 2024.”

After further reviewing the situation, the state government decided to lift the temporary suspension of all internet services in Manipur, which was initially imposed as a preventive measure in the public interest.

Previously, the internet ban was imposed on September 10 for five days. Although it was set to end on Sunday, it was extended due to concerns over law and order. On September 13, DIG Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) Manish Kumar Sachar visited Thangkanphai village in Kangpokpi district and Songpehjang relief camp in Saikul Hilltown, where he engaged with representatives of the Kuki community.
