It will be a direct confrontation on the road between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the Visva Bharati University authority in the first week of May. The university authority has issued an eviction notice for ‘illegally occupying” a piece of land owned by Nobel laureate Dr. Amartya Sen. The university rejected Dr. Sen’s claim that it was his parental property and wanted to clear the premises by May 5. The West Bengal Chief Minister has already thrown her weight in favour of Sen and handed over a document showing the land belongs to Dr. Sen. The Chief Minister has also announced that she will physically prevent the authority from occupying land, and if necessary, she will sit in dharna in front of Dr. Sen’s residence, ‘Pratichi,” in Shantiniketan.
