Mahatma Gandhi University sets up rare disease institute

The Institute of Pediatric Super Specialty and Rare Diseases was launched by Mahatma Gandhi University of Medical Sciences and Technology, Jaipur.
University Chairman Dr Vikas Swarankar said that this is the first such centre in the private sector in the country. He said that 28 per cent of the total population are children, but super speciality services for the treatment of their serious and rare diseases are not as per the requirement. Children suffering from rare diseases unfortunately die before the age of one year. Keeping this in mind, this initiative has been taken. He said that the amount of equipment, implants and medicines required for the treatment of children in the age group of 18 years is different, and their treatment requires expertise.
Emeritus Chairman Dr ML Swarankar said, “The level of medical services available in the society is estimated from the health of children. By the year 2025, a world-class unit will be ready in the institute for research of rare and complex diseases and super speciality treatment of children.”
Director of Rare Diseases and Children’s Super Specialty and Head of the Department of Infants and Pediatrics, Dr. Ashok Gupta said that a large number of children population in the society are affected by rare diseases and this institute will prove to be a ray of hope. University Vice Chancellor Dr Achal Gulati, Dr Vinay Kapoor, Dr ND Soni, Dr Sudhir Sachdev, Dr Rajeev Bagrahatta and a large number of paediatricians were present in the program.
