Maharashtra’s ambitious bamboo plantation initiative for climate action

Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced a comprehensive plan to establish bamboo plantations covering over 10,000 hectares of land as a proactive measure to combat climate change. During the inaugural session of the ‘Environmental Sustainability Summit 2024: Harnessing bamboo’s potential for a sustainable tomorrow,’ Shinde emphasized bamboo’s remarkable ability to absorb carbon dioxide, making it a potent tool in the fight against climate change.

Highlighting the strategic approach, Shinde outlined plans to plant bamboo along highways and the Eastern and Western Expressway in Mumbai. He noted the anticipated surge in bamboo demand due to its versatility in producing ethanol, biomass, and its application in thermal plants. Shinde emphasized the profitability of bamboo plantations, surpassing sugarcane, as bamboo can also be utilized in crafting various household items.

To support farmers financially and promote environmental protection, the Chief Minister proposed subsidies for bamboo plantations. Governor Ramesh Bais emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s commitment to environmental protection and sustainable development. Referring to initiatives such as Ujjwala, PM-KUSUM, LED bulb distribution, and the Hydrogen Mission, Bais illustrated the central government’s efforts to harness green energy and reduce pollution. He directed universities across Maharashtra to transform their campuses into green and ‘carbon-neutral’ spaces.

Organized by Phoenix Foundation in collaboration with Maharashtra’s Environment and Climate Change Department and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, the day-long summit held at Y B Chavan Centre in Mumbai gathered agricultural experts, environmentalists, bureaucrats, and UN officials. The discussions centered around bamboo’s pivotal role in addressing global warming and enhancing environmental and human well-being.
