Maharashtra speaker sets MLA disqualification hearing dates

Maharashtra Assembly Speaker, Rahul Narvekar, outlined the schedule for hearings addressing the eligibility of 16 MLAs, including Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The proceedings kick off on 6th October, culminating in a final hearing set for 28th November. A decision is anticipated within two weeks of the conclusion.
This decision trails the Supreme Court’s sharp censure of Speaker Narvekar over delays in addressing the MLAs’ eligibility. Adhering to the apex court’s mandate, Narvekar has unveiled the full timeline of hearings, which will also be presented at the Supreme Court session on 3rd October.

• 6 October: Shinde faction lawyers to respond to Uddhav group’s 23rd September affidavit.
• 3 October: Both parties to debate the simultaneous hearing of petitions. The Shinde faction opposes joint hearings.
• 13-20 October: Both parties’ attorneys can review and procure government documents related to the eligibility hearings.
• 20 October: Speaker Thackeray to decide on hearing all disqualification petitions concurrently after hearing both sides.
• 27 October: Shinde and Thackeray factions to defend their respective documentation.
• 6 November: Both factions to share written arguments regarding ineligibility.
• 10 November: The factions will present their case to the Speaker about ineligibility.
• 20 November: Both groups will submit witness affidavits and lists.
