With the addition of 832 deaths in the last 24 hours, Maharashtra’s Covid toll for May crossed the 25,000 mark, which is higher than the toll of most states for the entire pandemic. It reported 443 deaths `on Saturday and added 389 “old” deaths, taking its cumulative toll to 94,030.
The second wave of Covid-19, however, shows a declining trend across Mumbai and Maharashtra, but spots of worry remain. The state has registered less than 25,000 new cases for three consecutive days, but smaller districts and non-metro areas continue to drive the Covid graph.
The recovery rate improved to 94 per cent; the doubling rate now stands at 370 days. Mumbai’s positivity rate—number of positive cases identified per 100—stood at 3.14 per cent. It recorded its record positivity rate of 3 per cent on 19 January.
“In 10-15 districts of Maharashtra, the positivity rate is still very high. Besides, there is threat of black fungus infection (found in recovering/recovered coronavirus patients).
The number of active cases in Mumbai has decreased to 27,000. In last week constant slowdown in the new Covid cases have resulted in less active cases.
The city’s daily cases dropped below the 1,000-mark after 11 weeks—lowest since March. Mumbai was among the top 3 places to record highest cases every day in Maharashtra. After imposing lockdown-like curbs number of cases has fallen down.
Mumbai, the worst hit city in both waves, surprisingly emerged as one of the best managed cities. The case fatality rate fell from 3.79 last year to 0.86 this year so far.
