Lt Governor inaugurates Purple Festival in Jammu

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, along with Union Minister of Social Justice and Empowerment Dr Virendra Kumar, inaugurated the inaugural ‘Purple Festival’ in Jammu and Kashmir. The Purple Fest is a pioneering celebration of inclusion and diversity, aiming to showcase the diverse abilities hidden within disabilities and highlighting the resilience of individuals with special needs. Union Minister Dr Virendra Kumar joined the event virtually, while Member of Parliament Jugal Kishore Sharma was present in person.

During the inauguration, Lt Governor Sinha applauded the significant achievements of individuals with disabilities in various fields such as music, films, sports, art, and literature. He emphasized that these remarkable personalities have not only demonstrated their capabilities but also possess unique abilities contributing to the nation-building process.

The Purple Festival, witnessing the participation of around 5000 people, is designed to be fully accessible, highlighting the courage, strength, and determination of persons with special abilities. Lt Governor Sinha expressed confidence that the festival would be a milestone in the empowerment journey of individuals with special abilities in Jammu and Kashmir, inspiring citizens to work unitedly for their empowerment, rehabilitation, and the creation of an inclusive society.

Lt Governor Sinha reiterated the commitment of the Jammu and Kashmir Administration to providing equal opportunities and protecting the rights of individuals with special abilities. He announced the successful saturation in the distribution of motorised scooters and the administration’s takeover of Abhinandan Home for specially-abled students.

Providing updates on employment initiatives, Lt Governor Sinha reported that 384 individuals with special abilities were appointed to government jobs in the last financial year, with an increased reservation from 3 to 4 per cent. He assured the timely filling of vacant posts, whether under PSC or JKSSB and discussed plans for a legal framework to ensure employment opportunities for individuals with special abilities in the private sector.

Lt Governor Sinha called for a multi-dimensional approach and collaborative efforts from all stakeholders, including society and NGOs, to enable individuals with disabilities to realize their full potential.

The two-day Purple Festival will feature the distribution of assistive devices, sports competitions, cultural events, a fashion show, a talent hunt, and an exhibition. The event concluded with Lt Governor Sinha felicitating Divyangjan Ambassadors, including Para Athletes and Sportspersons, for their outstanding contributions in their respective fields, along with the distribution of wheelchairs and assistive devices to beneficiaries.
