Niryanand Rai, Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, produced the data of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in the Lok Sabha and quoted that a total of 761 people out of 8,565 arrests have been convicted for charges of communal or religious riots from 2018 to 2020.
The minister of state for home affairs said, “The government of India monitors the internal security and law and order situation… Over the years, an increasing trend has not been visible.”
A member of Parliament, Danish Ali, associated with the Bhaujan Samaj Party (BSP), asked about the increase in the instances of communal riots in the country. He further questioned the government’s initiatives to check these riots and the furnishing of relief to those affected.
According to the NCRB study, 8,358 people have been charged in these years. In Delhi, there has been a huge rise in the number of arrests, charges, and convictions over time. There were no arrests in 2018, but there were 11 in 2019 and 394 in 2020. In 2018, there were no arrests. With a total of 487 arrests, Bihar led the way in this year’s arrests.
